Marathon finish times typically range from 3 hours to 6 hours. The average UK marathon finish time is around 4 hours 30 minutes.
How long do I need to train for a marathon?
Most runners need 16–20 weeks of dedicated marathon training. A solid base of half marathon-level running fitness is recommended before starting a plan.

Running Events Devon would like to invite you to come and run with us.
At our new venue, the Train-ing Challenge event is being held on the Saturday 29th August 2026
We are operating our 'TUGG' system as in Turn Up Get Going, you can turn up any time between 7:30 and 14:30 BUT you have to be finished by 15:30.
Absolutely all abilities of runners / walkers can take part in our events as you have 7 hours to get to the finish of your final lap, each lap is 5.3k out and back, of our scenic route on an old disused train line.
Everyone is welcome whether you are planning to walk or run, whether you finish 1 lap, 4 laps or even 14 laps in the permitted time, we would class you as finisher and a winner, and you can collect your Medal for the event.
Please come and have a try and see how far you can go.
Places are strictly limited so please do not leave it too late to enter, if and when we reach capacity anyone entering after, will get a bespoke medal of their choice of the ones that we have with us on that day.
If looking for somewhere local to stay we can highly recommend the Fox & Hounds, they have rooms available as well as their bunk house and camping, the food is also highly recommended; check out their website here, foxandhoundshotel.com
