RUN THE LINE, HEAR THE HOWL INTRODUCING THE HEART OF WALES LINE (HOWL) TRAIL RUN Brand new for May 2027, the Heart of Wales Line Trail race is a fully supported trail running event that showcases the spectacular landscapes, communities and railway heritage of the renowned Heart of Wales Line Trail. The Heart of Wales Line is a long distance walking and running trail that weaves its way between railway stations along the Heart of Wales Line. It opened in the Spring of 2019 across Shropshire, Powys, Carmarthenshire, Brecon Beacons National Park, and the City and County of Swansea. The route is way-marked by roundels, finger posts and signs with the distinctive viaduct logo. For the inaugural hosting of this race event there are three distances to choose from: 50 miles, 26 miles or 16 miles.

The course
The Heart of Wales Line trail is a long distance walking and running trail that weaves its way between railway stations along the Heart of Wales Line. It opened in the Spring of 2019 across Shropshire, Powys, Carmarthenshire, Brecon Beacons National Park, and the City and County of Swansea. The route is way-marked by roundels, finger posts and signs with the distinctive viaduct logo. For the inaugural hosting of this race event there are three distances to choose from: 50 miles, 26 miles or 16 miles. All distances comprise sections of roads, tracks and public footpaths, and permissive ways. The courses offer gently rolling countryside with spectacular views. Getting there
Craven Arms (the finish point and where cars should be parked) is situated on the A49 trunk road which runs from Warrington, through Shrewsbury and Hereford to Ross-on-Wye. From Birmingham, head west on the A456 through Kidderminster to Ludlow and head north on the A49. From the M5 leave at junction 3 and continue on the A456 through Kidderminster to Ludlow and head north on the A49 The Lakeside cafe, Princes Ave, Llandrindod Wells LD1 5HU is located just off of Princes Avenue on the north west shore of Llandrindodd Lake, about a 10 minute walk from Llandridod railway station. From Newton head south on the A483 to Crossgates. From Rhayader head East on the A44 to Crossgates. From Leominster head West on the A44 to Crossgates. From Crossgates head south on the A483 to Llandrindod Wells. From Builth Wells head north on the A483 to Llandrindod Wells. The Knucklas Community Centre, Glyndwr, knightonLD7 1RR, is situated west of Knighton. From Knighton take the the B4355 about 2 miles towards Newtown, and turn left into the village. From Newtown and about 6 miles after Beguildy turn right into the village (there is a second turn if you miss the first as many people do – see directions from Knighton above). Keep to your left over the stream bridge and just after the pub turn right into Glyndwr then follow signs for the Community Centre, recycling, and railway station. The site is in front of you as you turn past the station access. St Mary's, Primary School, Bucknell is located slightly north and west of Bucknell railway station. From Ludlow follow the A49 West to Bromfield, turn left to Leintwardine and follow the A4413 through Leintwardine and Brampton Bryan. Shortly after Brampton Bryan turn right on the B4367 to Bucknell. From Craven Arms follow the A49 West to Bromfield, turn lright to Leintwardine and follow the A4413 through Leintwardine and Brampton Bryan. Shortly after Brampton Bryan turn right on the B4367 to Bucknell.
Parking
Parking at the finish in Craven Arms is available for all three distances at the Discovery Centre, Craven Arms, SY7 9RS. This is a voluntary contribution system, £2.50 for all day or £5.00 for 24 hours (please see notices when arriving there). It is then up to you to make your way to the start line in plenty of time for registration, if you park here. We encourage you to use public transport. Is the course marked?
The course is way-marked by roundels, finger posts and signs with the distinctive viaduct logo. However this a self-navigating race, so gpx files (available on website) on your smart watch or phone, or a paper map and compass is essential.
Is there a kit list?
Yes, we have a mandatory kit list, which is available in the Athlete Guide, sent to participants two weeks before the race.
What is the minimum age for entry?
Minimum age of entry for the HOWL50 is 18 years of age on the day of the race. Minimum age of entry for the HOWL26 is 18 years of age on the day of the race. Minimum age of entry for the HOWL16 is 17 years of age on the day of the race.
